HAZARDOUS  MATERIALS  RESPONSE  TEAM

The Clarence Fire District # 1 Hazardous Materials Response Team (CFD--HMRT) was officially formed in 1984 and is one of the oldest Haz-mat teams in Erie County.

CFD--HMRT is a class "A" or Level "1" hazardous materials response team.

CFD--HMRT consists of a specialized group of trained individuals dedicated to the emergency handling of unknown hazardous substances.

CFD--HMRT is the primary haz-mat response team within the Towns of Clarence, Newstead, Lancaster, and parts of Amherst.

CFD--HMRT works closely with Brighton Fire District # 5 (Tonawanda, NY) as they are the only other HMRT in Northern Erie County.  A mutual-aid agreement is in place with Brighton Haz-Mat for us to help provide services to Kenmore, Tonawanda, North Tonawanda, Grand Island, Amherst, and the SUNY at Buffalo North campus.

Due to the wide range of industrial facilities in both coverage areas, mutual-aid is commonly used.  It is common practice to put Brighton Haz-mat on standby, and vice versa, until the threat is determined.

CFD--HMRT has the capability to respond and mitigate the following situations:

  • Air, water, & soil monitoring
  • Industrial spills or leaks
  • Transportation incidents involving chemical release
  • Biological & Chemical terrorist incidents (Weapons of Mass Destruction)
  • Clandestine drug labs
  • Radiological identification and containment
